Malarkey Vista® Picked For Condo Roofs

Upcycled tire rubber and plastic shingles extend roof life

Over 3,000 squares of Vista® roofing shingles now cover the condominiums in the Highland Park community in Mission Viejo, California. The shingles, from Portland, Oregon-based Malarkey Roofing Products are manufactured with NEX® Rubberized Asphalt, a patented formula that blends high-grade asphalt with upcycled rubber and plastic polymers from used tires and plastic bags.

Malarkey pioneered polymer modified (rubberized) asphalt shingles. Today, the entire shingle line is polymer modified – opening the benefits of this superior shingle-making technology to all price points.

Incorporating polymers from used tires into our shingle formulation not only makes the shingles more eco-friendly by recycling these products, but we also benefit from the advanced technology inherent in the materials themselves, ‘upcycling’ these products to improve our own, Malarkey said.

For example, automobile tires are highly engineered for all-weather performance and durability – attributes also desired in shingles, and which don’t diminish simply because the tread is worn. The integration of upcycled tire rubber helps improve the strength and longevity of the shingles.

The rubberized asphalt provides a Class 4 impact rating—the highest possible—improving hail resistance and flexibility. In addition, shingles are designed to be eco-friendly by incorporating recycled materials and using smog-reducing granules,

Signing on to a residential reroofing project of such scale is no small feat. The average roof size of a single-family home is about 100 times smaller, at only 30 squares. Aside from the number of condo roofs needing new material, roofing contractors have to navigate relations with the homeowners association and residents of the neighborhood they will occupy during the project, Members of Malarkey’s Southern California team joined the contractor One Stop in meeting with both the property manager and governing board. Following these meetings, the Malarkey team committed to a full suite of Malarkey products for the roof system including ice and water barrier, underlayment, starter, and ridge shingles.

The project took over four months to complete.
