Recycled Rubber Used in Award-Winning Track
The Wildcat Stadium at the University of New Hampshire has been awarded the American Sports Builders Association 2024 Outstanding Facility of the Year in the Outdoor Track category.
Opened in 2016, the facility hosts the men’s and women’s teams.
Recent upgrades were necessary to replace the track and ensure NCAA compliance.
The full-depth track reconstruction project included a new asphalt base, the installation of channel drains, and in-ground field sports equipment.
Recycled rubber was incorporated into the construction of the UNH Wildcat Stadium outdoor track, according to Liberty Tire Recycling, a partner in the project.
This use of tire-derived recycled rubber in the track contributed to providing a safe, sustainable, and resilient surface for the student-athletes, and diverted end-of-life tires from the waste stream, Liberty said.
Recycled rubber is a common material used in the construction of athletic surfaces, including running tracks.
Among the benefits, recycled rubber tracks offer superior durability and are impermeable.
They provide good shock absorption and energy return, enhancing athletic performance and reducing stress on joints.
